About

HumanHerbivores.com advocates for plant-based diets, which can benefit the environment, animal welfare, and human health.  Of these, HumanHerbivores is primarily focused on the environmental benefits.

While, in general, plant-based diets have less negative environmental impacts than animal-based diets, and ideally everyone would make a full switch, this site is not restricted to users who completely abstain from animal products.  The full spectrum of users, from vegans (herbivores) to meat-eaters (carnivores), can see the environmental footprint of their food choices.  A vegan can learn that eating treenuts, such as cashews, can actually use more water than pork per 10 grams of protein (by ~190 Liters50 gallons).1,2  Greenhouse gas and land favor treenuts however, by ~3/4 kilograms1.75 pounds and ~1/4 Meters23 feet2, respectively.  Conversely, a carnivore can learn that a vegan meal compared to a meat-based meal could save ~155 Liters40 gallons (500 Calories), and might decide to make a daily habit of eating a vegan meal.3

Environmental quantities tracked: water use, greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and land use.

Users can see their impact by using the Estimators and tracking their stats by creating a free account.
